    I personally have hope for the future of the UK, only if we kick out the conservatives though. I think the conservatives look to the past too much and the majority of our problems come from them. I will be looking to move abroad if the conservatives stay in power, since I feel like I'll feel very alienated with the other brits around me who voted for them. I already feel alienated due to brexit but I have hope that things will look up slowly, after the current government is kicked out.

    As a brit I always say "they have German ancestry" I never quite understood calling someone a another nationality if they, even their parents, never lived there. They live in Britain, they're British. Some brits who are anti-monarchy try and say stuff like, they're not even british and I'm like...yes they are? Having different ancestory doesn't make you any less your current nationality.

    The problem with the UK is that it looks down its nose at the rest of the World and watches the UK fall apart around them.When the UK could cherry pick the best out of the rest of Europe and the World.After living and working in Australia for half of my life I have returned very recently after an inheritance of a house to live in.I am self funded after saving all my life but I really worry about those that hav’nt or don’t.People accuse the Tory’s or Brexit for what’s happening.Who ever is at fault all I know when I walk down the street in Sydney all the shops are open,also the same in Spain and France.When I walk down the street in Poole my hometown it’s is the lack of businesses open and the high street lack of vibrancy that hits someone who can be subjective after living overseas for so long.So Yes it’s either the Conservative Laissez Faire Economic model letting the economy fall apart or something deeper.An English malaise that it has not dealt with since WW2 and the Empire Days.It needs to NOW !

    Here in the UK and even more so in the US, the leaders are seen to have feet of clay. Leaders should inspire confidence and respect. Now they are seen to be self-promoting and greedy, both for money and power. Nobody seems to care about their fellowman. We all are concerned for the future for our children and grandchildren. The world seems no longer to offer adventure and possibility but only danger which saps our energy and faith in humanity. The powers that be seem only intent on imprisoning us and removing our liberty.

    Germans are not docile -- they just have proportional representation, which forces coalitions, which in turn prevents political extremism -- at least for now (and a 5% hurdle to keep the nutjobs out of parliament), It's not perfect but it seems to be fit for purpose until someone comes up with something better. Winner takes it all has never been a good idea. Politics is good if it's boring.

    If you would stop using the word British it would be better. Because everything you say can be said generally only about the English. I lived in Scotland for almost seven years and don't recognise that country in what you call British. I can not speak for the Irish but I tend to think they and the Scots have attitudes much in common. One thing those two sister countries seem to have in common is believing the English to be quite insular and superior as well as deluded. Negative to the standing of other countries in general and delusional grandios about England and it's place in the world.

    It's interesting that you frame Johnson's and Trump's elections as causes rather than symptoms. They might have been catalysts than led foreigners to sit up and take notice, but I would tend to see them (and Brexit, with Johnson's populism to some extent being just a vehicle for that sentiment) as having the commonality that voters weren't so much voting _for_ them in a positive way, but voting for them as a vote _against_ some status quo that Brexit-Johnson/Trump were themselves railing against. Which means that for whatever reason, the electorate were already disillusioned. The elections did of course broadcast that disillusionment to people in other countries who hadn't fully noticed it yet, but that's perhaps more just a case of foreign assessments on UK/US political status quos catching up with native assessments in terms of electorate contentment/desires for radicalism.

    Dude, you sound like a pro-german former east germany propagandist working for DDR (detsche demokratische republic) , portraying germany so positively, that is perceived comical. here in germany . we do not behave like you do, its really giving "out of reality" touch. do not forget, that first, the world war one destroyed trust in german governing and authorities, then the national socialism and hitler destroyed the average citizens and peoples trust in politics and politicians and the the world war one and two destryoed self confidence and self image a lot. what kind of germany are you talking about? where is that kind of germany you seem to exprience located?! do not forget, that after the war years, real justice was never managed, bc germany was divided in two countries, spying each other, hating and degrading each other, the capitalist and former nazi ruling in west, the communist and former nazi party members ruling in former east germany. the nazi regime was never really solved, but shifted!!! the nurnberg trial showed only a tiny bit of helding rulers accountable, but majority got away! and people did not forget that! do not forget that the unification of former east and west germany, it had a lot of abuse, exploitation and losses. for one, a lot of costs on west german side and on the other hand, losing housing, wealth and identitiy in east german side. people on both side didnt like the methods used and programs executed on both sides for the unification!. east germans still have severe depression and distrust in politicians. and after the financial crisis esp after 2008, shifting more to free market, selling out social housing apartments (at least two millions!) not building more social housing apartments, the migration flooding in with no real concept how the migrants from 2011 should get integrated and financed, just added more distrust in politics, that had been already been there for decades! no , i dont trust german political system either, i live and work here nearly 50 , fifty, years long as a migrant myself. the only person i trust, is in myself. germans do the same, in the end, the citizens here trust in themselves. also, we like to show it, if necessary in various ways in whom and what we believe or not. french and german a different breed people. UK citizens and US citizens have not experienced historical events the same way, never developed philosophies, never developed renaissance , never had to behead their kings, kill their leaders, fight for human basic rights, for voting rights, for education and enlightenment, but UK citizens and US citizens are good in escapism and being part of corrupted systems. maybe that gives the impression as if germans trust in politics, bc actually they trust in their own adaptation and knowledge they gain from experiences of the past, but that is not the same with "trust in politics".

    Something like "public opinion" doesn't exist (any more). It's a rumour, there would be something, all people have in common, and everybody claims they are the owner or knower of the public opinion. They don't realize there are many of them. It's emphasized by social bubbles nowadays by social medias. Second thing is political campaigning goes more and more like "current governement is stupid", that's how different parties adresse each other. Nigel Farage, or Donald Trump in Germany the AfD and Friedrich Merz a little. They are destroying the picture of a working country by intension. 40 Years ago this was more like "we have to change nuances" today it's like "This is all crap".

    • @britingermany
      @britingermany 3 дні тому

      I don’t see public opinion as being any less now than 40 years ago. There are many cues to look at in the culture to gauge what the dominant Zeitgeist is but these things maybe change more quickly and more frequently than previously.

      @@britingermany The so called "split" in society, one part thinks we are in a crisis, others think we are in prosperity, is something rather new. We rather have 2 , 3, 4 public opinions, instead of 1. But people don't realize or don't admit. They tend to consider themselve as normal, as the default no matter if they make up 20% or 30% of society. This is were "perception" diverges from democracy. Majorities become a feeling, not a counting of votes. The number of statements, where 90% would agree on, is shrinking. This is how I would define public opinion.

    Those are bizarre figures but I doubt they are up to date. That 61% support in Germany presumably predates the bombing of Nord Stream and the reversal of Germany's pacifist policies. Everything has been changed since 2022, especially because of Ukraine, Gaza and a variety of other scandals. The number of people believing their governments are corrupt has soared in virtually all western countries. They aren't wrong.

    I am surprised that the level of acceptance in Germany is so high. What I keep hearing among friends and family is - arbitrarily collecting - severe disappointment in our chancellor who fails to make himself visible at actually leading. The foreign minister receives the typical sexist accusation that an attractive lady often may receive, as being a fraud, and making too many oops-type mistakes. The economics minister, who managed the gas crisis quite successfully, still is accused of being unprofessional because his attempt at a heating reform was indeed unprofessional - I concede that this was caused by the lack of time left to do it properly with that gas stuff. And it promised to severely affect the pockets of the people, particularly home owners. Maybe the rise of the AfD provoked some counter-reaction of government solidarity against those among the others. Still, they will probably switch over to the CDU/CSU next year, which could well make the situation worse.

    My take is that Olaf Scholz and his crew have been dealt a difficult hand, what with the aftermath of Covid, having to wean us off the Russian gas, the war in Ukraine, Russia interfering everywhere. But I trust that while they may sometimes be inept and bad at communication, at least they (with the exception of the idiot wannabe-neoliberal FDP) have the interests of the people at heart and they try to steer this liner to the best of their abilities. That is not the case with the Tories, whose policies serve only a tiny, already well-off donor class, with total disregard to the rest of the country going down the drain. They'd ram the liner against a bridge if it helped them and their friends and club members to make it off with all the gold. And let's not even talk about Trump who only cares about himself and not even his donors. Regarding the US, it is kinda weird how well the Biden administration's policies are actually working and are forward-thinking, but it does not seem to get through to the people.

    I would have thought the rise of AFD in Germany might suggest a lower level of trust in the system than might suggest.

      That’s a good point and I think an interesting indicator to keep in mind. Some studies have found that people who loudly condemn the afd secretly vote for them…that’s why shutting down discussions never works

    I’m 51. I wish I’d travelled around and lived in other countries when I was younger because I wanted to do but didn’t. I’ve always lived in Britain. Now I wouldn’t want to actually live in another country. I’d just feel lost, out of place and homesick in an alien culture.

    I think it comes to the character the different national societies have developed and whom they embody since decades/centuries! Yes, we germans are a VERY collectivist society if it comes to politics, but since WW2 at least, we question our past unlike the UK and the US, where liberalism and great empires turned into national irrational pride (e.g. see which arguments an english football-fan brings, if the national teams looses to the german one). But besides that the political&societal systems(centralist; 2nd amendment; 2-Party-system, aso) as well as self-portaits as being part of the great, old country , which both are at least still partly rooted in society , that were developed during the golden times get cracks now and yet, neither politicians nor the society as a whole changed it! And many citizens are disappointed by these arguments, populists like Boris Johnson or Donald Trump recycle! Greetings from Germany :)

    LINEAR THINKERS and Arch COVERT "Remainers" and "BIG GOVERNMENT" advocates like Antoine who substitute the state for the all knowing, all benevolent Divinity or God that it most definitely isn't, can dissemble and click bait their way through YT all they like but unlike Antoine who's clearly been living under a rock for the last four years, swallowing everything that's fed to him and who's completely LACKING in LATERAL CRITICAL THINKING ABILITIES, a good many of us are aware that BIG GOVERNMENT IS NOT OUR FRIEND AND NEVER EVER WILL BE! Andrew Bridgen's democratic model of DIRECT DEMOCRACY would root out so much of the absolute, gross and malevolent corruption that absolutely riddles the British State! COVERT LEFTISTS and dissemblers like Antoine who even with his "Stuck on Stupid" LINEAR THINKING BRAIN managed to work out where his own bread was buttered and left the UK and it's failing housing system amongst many other failings for the economically sunnier shores of the Reich! Ha, ha! Here are a few FACTS that show even Germany that USED to be the ENGINE OF THE EU is facing very serious systemic problems. Just a simple search on Numbeo shows the vast gulf in energy costs of UTILITIES for a 85sq metre apartment in Munich compared to the same in one of Mexico's high population holiday cities with year round hot sticky tropical weather and high air conditioning use. Munich: GBP £236.81 vs Mexican resort: £64.86. No, all is not well in the Reich! Eventually even Antoine's DELUSIONAL sense of reality will come crashing down once BRICS+ ever expanding membership and currency competition mark the denouement of the FIAT currency based WESTERN ALLIANCE countries. As China (with its new opening of one new COAL FIRED POWER STATION PER WEEK - to power the steel plants that make our wind turbines) and Asia understand all too well CHEAP AFFORDABLE ENERGY is the best ASSURANCE FOR A THRIVING ECONOMY and AFFORDABLE NON-REGRESSIVE UTILITY COSTS! Germany can't escape this essential truth anymore than anyone else but of course the "Stuck on Stupid" Climate Alarmist Cultist Lunatics with their REGRESSIVE HIGH ENERGY COST POLICY AGENDA will always be the last to acknowledge this basic FACT!

    Its not the leaders it’s the policies. The politicians and media in Westminster have lost their moral compass. So much so its the rich and powerful that are dictating policy. They hide their failures in the 24/7 media. The poor and the working poor are victimised and the lower & middle, middle class are now feeling the squeeze. Basically, there is no money and so we lurch from one crisis to the next. The chickens of decades of mismanagement are all coming home to roost.

    Two remarks: trust in the German government coincides with the chancellorship of "Mama" Merkel. She is a woman, very much down to earth, honest and absolutely unpretentious, a person deemed to be very knowledgeable and very hardworking. It was to her credit that confidence in her government rocketed. The UK? Well, people feel they have been fooled by the Brexiteers, namely the then prime minister(s). As it turned out most of the promises turned out to be false and the standard of living did not roar after Brexit. On the contrary many EU subsidies were suddenly gone. And so were many straight adminitrative guidelines and rules. All due to a couple of crooks who considered their own wellbeing as more important than that of their country. Small wonder, that people don't have trust in a contraption that made a deceit like Brexit possible and, on the flipside the EU is now considered a stable and safe heaven.

    2022 in Germany was the year of the energy crisis due to the war in Ukraine. The German government made several quick decisions like building LNG terminals, switching to new natural gas providers, the Deutschlandticket or subsidising the cost of energy. So perhaps 2022 was just an especially good year for the government because they could demonstrate that they could act quickly.

    Have to disagree with the speaker's view on the mode of protest of the French population. In my view its correctly and appropriately aimed and timed. Only when the permanent officials get the sweet smell of success every time they open the windows, will the message be appreciated. "After you Claude" clearly doesn't work nowdays, either over there or in the UK😂

    Definitely fascinating! I just hope that here in Germany things are not going to go down, as rapidly - but stay on a level. It all will depend on how the economy develops. If we do a slow but steady recovery, I think there is a chance that things are not going down the drain completely (public opinion wise, I mean) Edit: Do you think one reason for the differences between Germany vs Britain and US lies partly in the differences in the voting systems? I certainly believe this is part of it.

    Brexit is a disturbing example of what might be happening to Germany as well: A political class in abject ignorance of the real role the UK has in international politics and economy and even proudly denying reality. And while things in Germany have not yet developed that far we that is all Germans seem to be well on our way to comparable ignorance and self-delusion: People who can remember the 1940s i.e. war and hunger, are older than 84 years, a dwindling minority who have no say anymore in opinion making. People like myself who can remember the cold war are older than 50 years. During the cold war and afterwards until the EU expansion 2007 Germany was at the center of any international agreement. But now things have changed. Whatever happens in Ukraine is worked out by Poland, Finland, some other "front" countries and the US, China, Russia, Iran, India (yes the world is complicated and vast) but Germany's opinions remain unsolicited. That a whopping 20% of parliament (AFD+BSW) are capable of openly mouthing Putin's and MAGA propaganda is something I do find quite outrageous but I don't see that either AFD or BSW loose popularity about it. As to your question: I belong to the 60% who have trust in the German institutions. If I recall correctly there is a strong correlation between the "trust polls" and the "corruption assessments". I suspect that the US and the UK have "gained" in corruption scoring as well.

    • @britingermany
      @britingermany 3 дні тому

      Regarding the corruption That could well be yes. Thank you for answering honestly. I think most people misunderstand what trust means in relation to these polls. Where there is no trust in government society tends to be run by gangs, mafia or militia. Germans never hesitate to call the police when there is an accident or a quarrel with a neighbour….this demonstrates a high level of trust in the police…there are other countries where the last thing you want to do is contact the police…

    70% in Germany do not trust the Olaf gang (Federal Government). There are a lot of polls telling this.
